Doctor arrested for treating Covid patients in Thane without Govt’s permission

Thane, May 11 The Rural Police on Monday arrested a doctor who allegedly treated Covid
patients at his clinic without permission from the government and in violation of pandemic
regulations.
An offence under sections 188, 269 of Indian Penal Code and also Epidemics Act and the
Disaster Management Control Act was registered against the doctor who ran a clinic at Vangani
of the district and also another lady doctor who treated the patients at the clinic, police said.
Based on that, doctor Umashankar Gupta was arrested.
He was produced before a magistrate who remanded him into magisterial custody for 14 days.
A couple of days back, a video of the doctor claiming to have treated thousands of patients had
gone viral, following which the District Health department filed a complaint with the local police
against him.
He charged exorbitant sums of money for the treatment.
The local police are probing into the crime further it was stated.
