Mumbai: Budget session of Maharashtra Legislature to begin today

The budget session of Maharashtra Legislature will begin today in Mumbai. The session will begin with the address of Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. Finance minister Ajit Pawar will present the budget for fiscal 2022-23 on March 11. This budget session is expected to be stormy as the opposition BJP has demanded resignation of NCP minister Nawab Malik who has been arrested by ED on money laundering charges and the party has warned that it will not allow the state budget session to be held until the minister resigns from the cabinet. On the other hand, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has said the decision to seek the resignation of Minorities Affairs Minister Nawab Malik will be taken by the Chief Minister if needed. He said that the matter is under legal consideration and courts will decide what is right and what is wrong. He said the government is open to discussions and debates on issues of public welfare.

The election of the Assembly Speaker is also likely to be held during this session. The budget session will continue till March 25 and this will be the first full-term session after two years as the earlier sessions were held for a short duration due to a surge in Covid-19 cases in the state. The budget session was scheduled to be held in Nagpur but the state government decided to hold the session in Mumbai considering the threat of the Covid infection during travelling and stay in Nagpur. The Opposition boycotted the customary high-tea called by the state government on the eve of the Budget Session yesterday.
