National Hockey League, comprising 32 teams from US and Canada, not to send its players to Beijing Winter Olympics

National Hockey League (NHL) has confirmed it will not send its players to the men’s ice hockey tournament at the Beijing Winter Olympics because of a surge in Covid-19 cases. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Olympic participation is no longer feasible with 50 league games postponed to date. The Games are scheduled to begin in China on 4 February, next year. The decision comes as a huge disappointment for players, who had negotiated a return to the Olympics into the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The NHL is a professional ice hockey league in North America comprising 32 teams, 25 in the United States and seven in Canada.
