G7 health ministers call for urgent action to combat highly transmissible Omicron strain spreading across world

G7 health ministers yesterday called for urgent action to combat the highly transmissible new Omicron Covid-19 strain spreading across the world. The G7 Ministers has issued a joint statement following an emergency meeting to discuss concerns related to the Omicron variant.

In a joint statement, they said, the global community is faced with the threat of a new, highly transmissible variant of COVID-19, which requires urgent action.

Underlining the strategic relevance of ensuring access to vaccines, they pledged to hold to their donation commitments, as well as to provide support to research and development. Ministers praised the exemplary work of South Africa in both detecting the variant and alerting others to it, it added.
