UN agencies call for end to attacks on health care facilities in Ukraine

The UN agencies have called for an immediate end to attacks on health care facilities in Ukraine. In a joint statement yesterday, the UN Children’s Fund, the World Health Organization, and the UN Population Fund said that attacks are killing and causing serious injuries to patients and health workers, destroying vital health infrastructure, and forcing thousands to forgo accessing health services despite catastrophic needs. They said that about 4,300 children have been born since the conflict began and 80,000 Ukrainian women are expected to give birth in the next three months, with oxygen and other medical supplies running dangerously low. The health care system in Ukraine is under significant strain, and its collapse would be a catastrophe.

Meanwhile, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said at least 596 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the military operation, and at least 1,067 have been injured. It said that 43 of those killed were children.
