One Solar City in Each State/UT : Maharashtra Excluded

States/Union Territories have been requested to select one city (either the capital city or a
renowned tourist destination) which can be developed as a solar city where all houses have
rooftop solar energy plants and all electricity needs of the city are fully met from Solar
Energy or other renewable energy sources. So far 21 States have identified their cities which
can be developed as solar cities.
To be declared as a ‘Solar City’ the generation of electricity from various renewable
resources in the city should be equal to or more than the power needs of the city. The
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is implementing a number of schemes for
promoting the adoption of renewable sources of energy for generation of electricity. These
schemes include setting up of Solar Parks, Rooftop Solar; Solar Street Lights, use of urban /
municipal waste for generating power etc. All these schemes are being implemented in
different areas / parts of the country. It has been planned that all these schemes be converged
so that one city in each State is developed as a Green City. Further, Hon’ble Minister, NRE in
November 2020 has written Hon’ble Minister, Minister of Heavy Industry to issue directions
on coverage of Solar Cities under the FAME II scheme.
